St Edmund's College is England's oldest Catholic school and has a long established reputation for welcoming and educating international students. The summer school is an integral part of the College and promotes high standards of personal achievement, conduct and community spirit. These summer courses are an ideal preparation for transition to the main school or to another British school.
The educational experience provided on the summer school compliments the child's teaching and learning at home. The course offers new learning opportunities through exciting projects, theatre, educational visits, option courses and activities all designed to challenge and extend personal development and language competence. Native speakers and bilingual students are welcome.
SUMMER SCHOOL 2015
Our course starting July 5 is fully booked and the course starting 26 July is booking well. We are really pleased to have enthusiastic bookings and messages, in particular it is nice to see students booking from Canada, Norway, Vietnam, Iceland, Poland and Greece. We already have 27 nationalities represented. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and loyalty.
New for this summer is an 8 hour Horse Riding course which includes 4 hours of riding and also an IELTS preparation course for older pupils. As you will see, we have changed our age ranges. We now only have Middle, Senior and Sixteen plus programmes. This is because the older students have been our most loyal and appreciative customers.
NEWS FROM THE COLLEGE
Since last summer we have been very busy and you will notice one or two changes at the college. We now have a stunning newly refurbished dining hall, the Headmaster has also commissioned a wonderful display of the college's history which is hanging on the walls in the Ambulacrum. You may be interested to know that 13 of our students applied to Oxford and Cambridge this year! Another outstanding achievement is that one of our students achieved 100% in both of her Chemistry AS exams.
Barbara and Louise in the admissions office are looking forward to receiving bookings and the rest of the team is busy planning another fantastic summer!
MEMORIES OF SUMMER SCHOOL 2014
Caroline Hugo Director of the Summer School writes
Summer School 2014 finished with a bang at around 2200 hours on Friday 15th August with a sensational fireworks display which could be seen for miles around. The celebrations were to mark St Edmund's College Summer School becoming the top accredited summer school in the UK and to bid farewell to our marvellous children before they set out on their long journeys home.
Every year is different and every year we say that 'this was the best year ever'. This year there were 303 children in total from 42 different countries from as far apart as Iceland and Malaysia. The children were extremely hard working, 146 pupils took external examinations in English at B1 to C2 level. The pass rate of 94% was impressive as some of these exams are three and a half hours long. In the picture you can see Class 2 from the junior school getting to know St Edmund.
The outstanding team of very talented class teachers wowed and inspired their classes and in particular to read and use the library. Creative writing, Shakespeare and Film Making appealed to the senior school who thoroughly enjoyed the new West End production of Shakespeare in Love.
Approximately 35% of the pupils were returning for a second or third year. Many of the children we have seen grow up from tiny ten year olds to six foot tall seniors. Delian Katerinov from Bulgaria for example, began summer school when he was nine in 2006 and returned every year. He has just passed C2 Level English with a First Class Pass at the age of 17. Above is a picture of the junior school sightseeing in London.
Whilst the children are generally very talented and rather academic they still enjoy option courses like Food Technology, Scuba Diving and Music. The end of course performance was a showcase for music and dance for which I would have paid good money to see. One of the highlights being the Moonlight Sonata beautifully played by Jonas Janta aged 14 and who is now in Poetry in the main school. St Edmund's College is an amazing school which has a very special ethos and identity which is well known all over the world.
We can't wait for next summer!
